Home-Learning Exercise by Lek Hong

2. As deforestation is occuring in the Amazon region, the plants the ants use as traps will be destroyed and hence the ants cannot create these traps and cannot capture their prey and will die out. Also, their home, a leaf pouch, will also be destroyed due to deforestation, hence they will be more open and prone to danger from predators, and may  die out.

3a.   Relationships

Commensalism:  Between ants and the tree. The ants use the stem of the trees to construct the traps, and the tree does not stand to lose.

Exploitative relationships: Predation: Ants consume the prey caught in the traps.

Mutualism: Between the fungus and the ants. The ants farm the fungus and the fungus provide protein to glue the structure of the trap together.

3b. Commensalism: Orchids and ferns growing in tree trunks
Exploitative relationships: Predation: Cheetah & Thompson Gazelle
Mutualism: Clown fish and sea anemone
